One of my favorite Sanderson’s so far。 Love the vibe, love the story, love the cosmere connection。 Great work!

Although I quite enjoyed the book, it did feel more like a series of encounters than a cohesive story。 and characters felt like caricatures, not necessarily in a bad way, but all in all this made an impression of a child story which went on for quite too long。 Story for kids written for adults。 Not bad, but did not reach the engagement of other sandersons books

I think this is Brandons most whimsical book so far with a little bit Terry Pratchett vibes。What I liked:- The main character Tress- The adventure- The weird planet with wacky seas- Connections to Brandons other books (Cosmere)- Most of the whismsical narrationWhat I didn't:- A little too YA for my taste- A bit too predictableOverall I think it's very good especially if you're a Cosmere fan。 I think this is Brandons most whimsical book so far with a little bit Terry Pratchett vibes。What I liked:- The main character Tress- The adventure- The weird planet with wacky seas- Connections to Brandons other books (Cosmere)- Most of the whismsical narrationWhat I didn't:- A little too YA for my taste- A bit too predictableOverall I think it's very good especially if you're a Cosmere fan。 。。。more

This is my first Sanderson novel, so I don't know how it compares to the rest of his works。 As a stand-alone, it was charming。 You can tell it was written for someone (his wife, as a gift), but it doesn't weigh down its whimsical qualities。I especially appreciated reading the explanation of the inspirations for the story, but they are pretty spoiler-y。 Read them afterwards。 This is my first Sanderson novel, so I don't know how it compares to the rest of his works。 As a stand-alone, it was charming。 You can tell it was written for someone (his wife, as a gift), but it doesn't weigh down its whimsical qualities。I especially appreciated reading the explanation of the inspirations for the story, but they are pretty spoiler-y。 Read them afterwards。 。。。more

So, I guess I do not always like fantasy books, and I am not sure why。 There are many I like and many I do not like。 Is there a pattern or sub-genre that I like more than others? I guess I should look into that…This book was weirdly told from a first-person perspective which seems to be an actual character from the book telling the story as in he wrote it。 There are attempts at humor that do not go well。Either way, I got about 30% through before I had to quit and move on to other books…If I look So, I guess I do not always like fantasy books, and I am not sure why。 There are many I like and many I do not like。 Is there a pattern or sub-genre that I like more than others? This book was a delight。 It gives a real fairy-tale feel but has more emotional heft and Sandersonian world-building than such a description would suggest。I listened to the audiobook with my family and only paid attention with half an ear for a good part, so I went back and read the ebook as well。 I was nearly as entertained the second time as the first。 It's got a good mix of what I like about Sanderson's books: dense, unique worlds and magic, heroic characters, a decent amount of heart, and hi This book was a delight。 It gives a real fairy-tale feel but has more emotional heft and Sandersonian world-building than such a description would suggest。I listened to the audiobook with my family and only paid attention with half an ear for a good part, so I went back and read the ebook as well。 I was nearly as entertained the second time as the first。 It's got a good mix of what I like about Sanderson's books: dense, unique worlds and magic, heroic characters, a decent amount of heart, and his trademark goofy dad humor that's actually smarter than it appears at first glance。 I'm very excited to see what he comes up with for the remainder of his Secret Projects books。Standouts in this book: Tress, the main character, who starts out as a total doormat and ends up coming into her own through her adventures, Fort, the deaf quartermaster who drives a hard bargain but has a heart of gold, and Salay, the helmswoman with guts of steel。 All experience growth and change in satisfying ways, and Hoid's cheeky narration toes the line between insightful and juvenile。Brandon still ain't much when it comes to romance, but this one is sweeter than most of his others, and the fairy-tale feel goes a long way toward ameliorating what might otherwise be a tad cliché or trite。 I've said it before: Sanderson may not be the top of the field in beautiful prose or perfectly-tuned characters, but he's more consistent than anyone else I've read。 I'll take 10 very-good novels over one masterpiece any day, and that's what he delivers nearly every time。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 There's been a lot of discourse, especially lately on whether Brandon is a good writer or not。 When I initially tried to finish the Mistborn trilogy so many years ago, I really wasn't convinced。 All the characters in the main group were interchangeable to me so the story wasn't super griping, the magic overexplained, and the romance forced。 The imagery and world building wasn't as fulfilling as my more recent forays into his work。 Reckoners and Skyward were full of lore and epic moments that wer There's been a lot of discourse, especially lately on whether Brandon is a good writer or not。 When I initially tried to finish the Mistborn trilogy so many years ago, I really wasn't convinced。 All the characters in the main group were interchangeable to me so the story wasn't super griping, the magic overexplained, and the romance forced。 The imagery and world building wasn't as fulfilling as my more recent forays into his work。 Reckoners and Skyward were full of lore and epic moments that were well built up to。 So while I've grown, so has Sanderson。 Tress is art。 Tress is literature。 Tress IS good writing。 Sanderson shot for a certain tone。 He nailed it。 Sanderson mashed together ideas he's held onto。。。and nailed it。 Without the pressure of deadlines。 Without constraints of expectations。 He could just write a book that was earnestly his。Brandon IS a great writer。There's no doubt for me now。My evidence I'll share in this example:**spoilers**"Many grammarians bemoan the word’s near-constant misuse— second only in dictional assassination to the way some people use the word “literally。” (Their use of which is ironic。) I’m not one of those people who care if you use words wrong。 I prefer it when words change meaning。 The imprecision of our language is a feature; it best represents the superlative fact of human existence: that our own emotions— even our souls— are themselves imprecise。 Our words, like our hearts, are weapons still hot from the forging, beating themselves into new shapes each time we swing them。 Yet irony is an intriguing concept。 It exists only where we want to find it, because for true irony, expectation is key。 Irony must be noticed to exist。 We create it from nothing when we find it。 But unlike other things we create, like art, irony is about creating tragedy。 Irony is reversal。 Set up, then collapse。 A perfect bit of irony is a beautiful thing。 So watch。 Enjoy。"This quote is prosaic。 It's thoughtful and less tangential to the story than surface value。 The book has lots of this and lots of character development。 Quite different from my first experience。 The characters are quite unique and distinct and the world building is intriguing and makes me even more excited to revisit Mistborn (as I have been planning to do for the Year of Sanderson) and read the other secret projects。If you weren't on board before, I'd urge you to return and check out Tress。 。。。more

I love this book。 I've always been a fan of fairytale retellings, while this isn't one。 It has the feel of one。 The whimsy, the sort of magical feel, and a sweet romance while also containing a very unique world to explore。 Just an overall fun, enjoyable read。 I love this book。 I've always been a fan of fairytale retellings, while this isn't one。 It has the feel of one。 The whimsy, the sort of magical feel, and a sweet romance while also containing a very unique world to explore。 Just an overall fun, enjoyable read。 。。。more

This is a pandemic book: a cozy read that enables you to escape from the challenges of the real world。 As noted in the postscript, the intent of this book was to be whimsical and fairy-tale adjacent (i。e。, a grown-up fairy-tale), similar to The Princess Bride by William Goldman or Good Omens by Sir Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman。 I think the book does a good job in relation to its stated goal, but it's not comparable in depth and quality to Sanderson's other works (understandable since it was w This is a pandemic book: a cozy read that enables you to escape from the challenges of the real world。 As noted in the postscript, the intent of this book was to be whimsical and fairy-tale adjacent (i。e。, a grown-up fairy-tale), similar to The Princess Bride by William Goldman or Good Omens by Sir Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman。 I think the book does a good job in relation to its stated goal, but it's not comparable in depth and quality to Sanderson's other works (understandable since it was written in about a quarter of the time as a full novel)。 Typical of books in the Cosmere franchise, it heavily leans into fantastical and expansive world-building that draws in the reader。 Unfortunately, deep character development was lacking, relying on clichés to convey context and character motivations—although this still aligns with the fairy-tale nature of the book。 。。。more

Finished this book two days ago and still gushing about it! A perfect adventure story for lovers of the Princess Bride - where the girl joins the pirate crew and does the rescuing。 =) I just loved this, and even though it is written for an adult audience, I think middle grade and YA readers would also love this story。 Highly recommend!

In his author's note, Sanderson stated that he was inspired to write the novel after watching "The Princess Bride" and thought about what it would have been like for Princess Buttercup to have more agency。 This novel was a fun ride written in the voice of a long-time character appearing in each Cosmere book。 You don't need to know much about the Cosmere as a whole, but there are fun easter eggs if you have read each book so far。The novel was a joy to read from beginning to end and left me thinki In his author's note, Sanderson stated that he was inspired to write the novel after watching "The Princess Bride" and thought about what it would have been like for Princess Buttercup to have more agency。 This novel was a fun ride written in the voice of a long-time character appearing in each Cosmere book。 You don't need to know much about the Cosmere as a whole, but there are fun easter eggs if you have read each book so far。The novel was a joy to read from beginning to end and left me thinking about pirates for days on end。 。。。more

I enjoyed 80% of this book。 I questioned whether I liked the general tone and environment at the beginning but really came to enjoy Lumar’s unique qualities。 Tress is written from the point of view of a beloved Cosmere character, an approach that Sanderson admits was a bit of an experiment。 Most of that point of view works really well。 The book is humorous and whimsical but at times disjointed。 There were a few too many narrative pauses with human-nature-type pontifications。 The narrative pauses I enjoyed 80% of this book。 I questioned whether I liked the general tone and environment at the beginning but really came to enjoy Lumar’s unique qualities。 Tress is written from the point of view of a beloved Cosmere character, an approach that Sanderson admits was a bit of an experiment。 Most of that point of view works really well。 The book is humorous and whimsical but at times disjointed。 There were a few too many narrative pauses with human-nature-type pontifications。 The narrative pauses suit the personality of the character telling the story but I just didn’t enjoy reading them as much。 All of that aside, Sanderson did an awesome job of creating an exciting new world with very unique characteristics。 Personalities in the book are varied and delightful。 I am still very much a fan of Sanderson。 。。。more
